O'Neil she was in her high-school times at the time of the auditions, auditioned in the 3rd season of Canadian Idol in the beginning of 2005. The quality of her singing impressed panel of judges and she was promoted to the 100th round. O'Neil was given high marks by the panel of judges. But she was a victim of massive losses during the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up within the bottom three as well as the second place. Judges were shocked by the results and instructed the crowd to select contestants such as Melissa with most impressive singing talent. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she never placed in the third place in the future. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil made it to the top two spots in the contest. Werner reportedly forecast that morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
